There's a reason wine collectors obsess over Burgundy. This small French region produces some of the most sought-after wines on earth — and understanding why starts with understanding the land.
The Magic of Terroir
Burgundy is where the concept of "terroir" was born. Here, two grapes — Pinot Noir for reds, Chardonnay for whites — express themselves differently depending on which plot of land they're grown on. A vineyard on one side of a dirt road can produce wine worth ten times more than its neighbor.
The Classification System
Burgundy's vineyards are ranked:
Grand Cru — The absolute pinnacle. Just 1-2% of production.
Premier Cru — Exceptional quality, more accessible.
Village — Named after their commune (Gevrey-Chambertin, Meursault, etc.)
Regional — Bourgogne Rouge/Blanc. Great entry points.
What to Expect in the Glass
Red Burgundy (Pinot Noir) offers red cherry, earth, mushroom, and an ethereal delicacy you won't find elsewhere. These wines whisper rather than shout.
White Burgundy (Chardonnay) ranges from razor-sharp and mineral in Chablis to rich and nutty in Meursault. This is Chardonnay at its most complex.
Where to Start
1. Bourgogne Rouge from a respected producer — learn the Pinot style
2. Chablis — pure, unoaked Chardonnay
3. Village wines from Gevrey-Chambertin or Volnay
4. When ready: A Premier Cru from Beaune or Nuits-Saint-Georges
